It can be challenging for new parents to find the time to exercise. Thankfully, the gym isn’t the only option for burning those extra calories. Active parents can get their steps in by simply heading outdoors for a quick jog with their bouncing baby in tow!

The days of wobbly-wheeled, rickety-framed strollers are long gone. Today’s models are premium-built, focusing on comfort, function, and durability. Running strollers are built to withstand the wear and tear rough terrain serves up.

Two of the most popular models of jogging strollers are the UPPAbaby Ridge All-Terrain Stroller and the BOB Alterrain Pro Jogging Stroller. Though similar, these two products deviate from each other in some important ways.

Keep reading as we pit these two top-tier strollers against each other.

Specs

The Ridge is the first running stroller from UPPAbaby, a company known for creating superior quality strollers.
  • Folded Dimensions: 18.5” L x 26” W x 36.5” H
  • Unfolded Dimensions: 38.5” L x 26” W x 40.5” H
  • Stroller Weight: 29.2 lbs.
  • Child Weight Limit: 55 lbs.
  • Front Wheel Size: 12”
  • Rear Wheels Size: 16”

The BOB Alterrain Pro stroller is no slouch either, providing a stellar option that rivals the most high-end models on the market.
  • Folded Dimensions: 39.3” L x 25.5” W x 16” H
  • Unfolded Dimensions: 46” L x 25.5” W x 45.5” H
  • Stroller Weight: 32.3 lbs
  • Child Weight Limit: 75 lbs.
  • Front Wheel Size: 12"
  • Rear Wheels Size: 16"

The BOB Alterrain Pro Jogging Stroller is the larger of the two strollers, which can be beneficial for accommodating growing children. However, this also means the stroller takes up more storage space (though it does have removable wheels to help it compact).

Drives like a Dream

Running strollers must navigate varying weather conditions and differing terrains, so they need high-quality wheels to make your child’s ride safe and comfortable.

The UPPAbaby Ridge is decked out in 3 “Never Flat” foam tires crafted from rubber-like EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) that never require inflation. These lightweight wheels are used with the Ridge’s Advanced Responsive Suspension system to improve your child’s comfort through shock absorption.

The BOB Alterrain Pro Jogging Stroller uses three pneumatic (air-filled) composite tires coupled with their patented SmoothShox Suspension System to reduce vibrations.

These differences are important as the BOB Alterrain Pro stroller requires you travel with an air pump in case you blow a tire. However, its pneumatic wheels provide a slightly smoother ride compared to the Ridge’s firm EVA wheels.

In Safe Hands

As they may be used at quicker speeds, both strollers prioritize safety above all else.

The UPPAbaby Ridge has a 5-point, no-rethread padded harness with lumbar support ensuring baby is secure and comfortable at all times. The stroller includes a hand braking system, which helps control speed on downhill slopes. A parking brake is also included, plus you can lock the front wheel for added stability. A reflective trim ensures the Ridge stands out at night, and a wrist strap is included to keep it secured to your arm.

BOB’s Alterrain Pro stroller has all the same safety features -- a 5-point harness with padded seat, a hand braking system, a parking brake, a lockable front wheel, reflective elements on the trim and wheels, and a wrist strap.

Handle with Care

The handling system of these jogging strollers is similar with both employing a (lockable) front swivel wheel and an adjustable, padded handlebar for increased comfort and grip.

However, the UPPAbaby Ridge can be converted into an everyday stroller. By fully removing the fabric seat you can connect the UPPAbaby Mesa V2 Infant Car Seat or the UPPAbaby Bassinet to the stroller’s frame. Keep in mind, you’ll need the UPPAbaby Ridge Stroller Adapter if you go this route.

Of note, the Ridge is also compatible with seats from Cybex, Maxi-Cosi, and Nuna.

Both the Ridge and the Alterrain Pro also have one-hand folding capability, making them easy to collapse and deploy when necessary.

 All the Rest

The canopies on these running strollers are also similar, with their fabrics crafted in UPF 50+ sun protection and waterproofing to keep your child dry. Airflow isn’t a problem either, as both models have adjustable canopies, ventilation windows, and flaps.

Finally, both the Ridge and Alterrain Pro have reclining seating, a water bottle holder, various pockets, and covered storage areas.

And the Winner is...

It’s tough to declare a winner between these two gems.

The UPPAbaby Ridge is smaller, lighter, doesn’t require tire inflation, and can be adapted for use with the fabric seat, a car seat, or a bassinet.

On the other hand, the shock system and wheels on the BOB Alterrain Pro Jogging Stroller make for a smoother ride. It’s also a larger stroller, which is great for accommodating your child as they grow. The downside is it can be more difficult for some people to collapse and store (although the wheels are removable, which is a plus!).

In the end, it all comes down to your situation. They’re both great options that can help you stay in shape while baby rests comfortably and enjoys the ride.
